Woz Flint Book Signing - The Distraction-Free First Draft
Great video! Very informative, I own the Royal Portable Type “O”. Would it be possible to make a video comparing that model to the type “O” shown here?
The model O is lovely and is more refined with more features. I'd choose it, if forced to pick one.
OMG I just cleared my first stuck type key... Thanks for this. :)
I absolutely adore the look of those earlier Olympias. This is steadily rising on my list of things to buy.
I am an IT professional that is absolutely seeking out the more mechanical in his private life. I spend a LOT of time behind a computer so that has become...drab? I use fountain pens and paper to do most of my writing and a typewriter sounds absolutely perfect to me as an addition to my desk! Wonderful mechanical workings, a gorgeous THING to have on the desk. Plus other people could read what I write too :P I'm 34 and never used a typewriter as a young person.
I own them both! Thanks for the comparison 😁
As a fan of pre-war Royal portables I really enjoyed this comparison. There was also a hybrid version of these two models called the Companion, same body as the Varsity but with a margin release key, color selector and the curved space bar. It also came in a very nice brown textured finish with chrome trim.
What’s the size of eyelets used?
like the music! who does your nails?
Me!
It would be nice if you stopped down your aperture a little so both your face and the typewriters would be in focus at the same time.
PATENT THAT!!!!!!!!!
I like the Varsity, but I think I’d miss the bichrome ability. Both nice machines though and a pleasure to watch you go over them.
I have a Smith Corona Graph text 90 and after typing 50 characters into it it says "Key Locked!" I can't seem to get out of it without a power cycle. No PDF manual is uploaded for this model so i have no clue what to do. Any ideas whats causing this?
No idea, but drop a question to Duane at the Phoenix Typewriter channel and he might be able to help.
I really like that you covered the different pitch of the bells. ❤
I love that Varsity…must find one in the wild.
I like both of them
Textured finish for the win
Thanks, Joe. Nice comparison. Always good to have a post from you!
Very nice look at these. I don’t have either, but have a Royal Deluxe (not quite Deluxe). Interesting to see the close similarities and not so obvious differences.
Two beautiful machines. But what impresses me Joe is how you handle the typewriters. You really know how to operate them and your knowledge shines through. Love all of your content. Great stuff!!
Recently found an Optima Super in cursive. Also have an SM-4 I lucked to find in Maine. The SM-4 is teutonic. It is optimized. I also like the Super better, mostly for the feel. The SM-4 is smooth and perfect in every way, but the Super's keys (bit larger) and strike leverage...it is nicer. A Remington from 1949, the All-New Portable has the same large key caps and super solid "ka-thunk" type feel of the Super. But the super is smaller and lighter.
Great video I have this problem too now I have a way to modify it.
This video was extremely informative and also functions as an excellent overview of typewriters in general. I use a Royal KMM from 1948 and it is my all time favorite.
You have to love that Congress typeface. My absolute favorite.
Baco ribbon number is disconnected 😢
Yes, it is just the later production SM-9 that has those specific problems. My 1966 version is built more like the SM3, with the same looks as the SM9 you presented.
1 line cover up tape is very hard to find
I found a near-mint 1968 SM9 at the thrift store a few days ago, complete with case. $5.99!!! What a steal! It has that robotic/sci-fi typeface (Senatorial) you mentioned. Personally, I love it! Thanks for the great review!!
Congrats!
I finally found a beautiful, pristine, 1956 Olympia SM-3 and was surprised (and a little disappointed) that I preferred my Smith-Corona Classic 12!
The Olympias aren’t for everyone,
I took your advice and got a pen pal, a fellow typewriter, on Type Pals, who lives on the other side of the earth on a small island off New Zealand. So we corresponded via typed letters and airmail. He has a fine collection of machines as I do. I would only have done this with your channel and discovering Type Pals. It is a blast and super old school. And the stamps are amazing! Best of all, I have made a new friend. We each collect typewriters and do film photography. I use onion paper and old-school "airmail" envelopes. I am starting to use carbon paper so I have a copy so I can remember what we talked about in the previous letters. Thanks!
Much thanks to Gregory Short for starting Type Pals.
This helped so much! And thank you for also helping to make heads and tails of that repair manual--where to find the screws, etc.
I just tried this recently with my Smith Corona Classic 12. It worked, but not well. I like your label idea, I'll try that next time.
I love the word "panacea." 😊 Love your content! Thank you!
Hi, I hope you're well. Your video came in handy with my desire to report everything on a single sheet, using my (small) collection of typewriters. Congratulations, your videos are an excellent inspiration for me. Hugs from Brazil.
I’ve had surgery on both eyes for detached retina and the shape and spacing between the letters makes it easier for me to read PICA and techno typeface in PICA is the easiest for me to read.
Obrigado estou fazendo um trabalho de conclusão de curso sobre o soroban
Very enjoyable videos, Joe. A possible program idea --- IBM Executive Typewriters with micro-elite type. I bought one second-hand 42 years ago. It has an 18-inch-wide carriage (!) and some special keys for Section and Paragraph so I wondered if it was a model designed for law offices. (Literally: "small type" and could handle legal sheets sideways!) The micro-elite type resembles 8-point printers type, so it's very much smaller than pica type and noticeably smaller than elite type, and it has proportionately spaced characters. I have never known of anyone else who has a model like this, not to mention that RUclips doesn't have a video on such an IBM that I've been able to find.
My friend Kevin has an Executive but it’s not with that small type!
Nice! brilliant, as usual!
Not to be rude but you have too much time. To be able to devote so much to this.
It is a really a brother. All typewriters are our brothers.❤.
Hi Joe, So, does this mean you got your Royal O up and running again? Hope so, since you said it's been a favorite lately, and if my favorite was down, I'd be a bit bummed. I finally got the Ted Munk repair Bible, and I also went ahead and got one for the Hermes and the Royal Sabre, which is pretty much the same as my Aristocrat Special, except the way the margins are set is different, the Special has these aluminum pegs with this ruby red dot in the center of each left and right peg. Right now it's only issue is with the shift, it seems to catch on the D key only, so that might be a fun fix, stay tuned on that, I'll let you know, for now, still recovering from surgery. That letter ever make it to you? When I lived in Arizona, we had slow mail. Took two week to send anything out or to receive something. My best to you and the Mrs.
I’ve used overhead projector sheets as backing sheets before. Got the heavy duty ones, but sometimes if the platen and rollers are slick it can’t grip the plastic
Thank you!
Thank you very much.❤. It is for free. I am tuned on your channel.

I use a heavy duty three ring binder page protector from Avery or similar--not the dollar store--these are slightly textured to eliminate reflection. I get two backing sheets from each page protector sheet. I have also had good results from plastic three ring page dividers just cut off the index tab. Again you need to buy quality product. My mate uses a sheet of watercolor paper from his sketch book. It is thicker than 24 pound bond and textured. Good luck. Rodney Hamilton
I have two SM 9’s but they are earlier metal models from the sixties. They are bomber and type easier than any machine I have. SM 3’s have the carriage shift that have problems over time. They type fast but the carriage shift is not my favorite in any typewriter except an ultra portable. I love my SM 9’s ( I have two in case one ever needs repair) so don’t be put off by this review. If you get an older metal version I don’t think it would disappoint. mho
What is a tutorial? I will see it wIth the GOOGLE.
The world ❤ Joe Van Cleave. A very smart person.
I know this is an old video, but the Sharpwriters can indeed be refilled. You have to take the internal spring out and load it into the rear clutch and put it back together. I'm not a big fan of the spongy feel of the writing experience, though, so I've never bothered to use one up.
True Value hardware store? Interesting video Joe! When do you make a robot out of your typewriters? Voice activated typing?
There were some electronic IBM Selectric machines with parallel printer interfaces. Connect it to a PC with voice recognition and there you go!
Joe, this is great stuff! Thank you for all your videos. I have a Torpedo 18 and when I return the carriage (move the return lever to the right) the carriage doesn’t stay there. It fails to ‘catch’ and instead the carriage fully returns to the left margin as soon as I let go of the carriage return lever. Any thoughts? It’s an otherwise beautiful machine. Thanks.
Something in the escapement mechanism isn’t engaging the rack gear to prevent the carriage from moving on its own. I’d start by a thorough cleaning and degreasing of the mechanism.
Good tutorial, Joe.
